My Story
In 2018 I was struck with inspiration for a single poem. In that moment I made a silent vow: someday I'm going to write a book.Someday is a dangerous word.As a high school teacher, coach, husband, and father of four, someday kept getting buried. For seven years I wrote when the mood struck — maybe once or twice a year when the house was finally quiet. By late 2025 I had about 15 poems to show for nearly a decade of dreaming.Then something shifted. I told my players and students the same thing every day: consistency is the key to success. It was time to listen to my own coaching. I made a vow — at least one poem every single day until the book was finished. In about 60 days I went from 15 poems to 150. I trimmed those down to the best 126, founded Odd Angle Press, and on March 1st, 2026, My Silly World was born.I thought I was done.A handful of poems that didn't make the cut into My Silly World were still sitting on my desk — advice poems with a different tone than anything in that collection. I started writing more of them. The style started light, almost humorous, but the more I wrote the more the tone sharpened. The humor fell away. The observations got harder. What started as a book of advice became something closer to a mirror.Soft Words, Hard Truths is the result. Same daily discipline. Completely different book.
